DESKTOP PUBLISHING STEPS:Set text size no larger than medium, centre menu bar in browser window, then hover over the following links for more information.
Designing the Project Before a project can be created, someone must state its basic form. Typically this would be the person/business who has a need for it. Is the project to be a letter, manual, newsletter, mailing list, website, or something else? What colours and fonts are desired? What images (if any) are to be used, and where do they come from? Decisions can be changed during the process of creating the project, but this step forms the necessary foundation.
Setting Up the Documents Basic factors must be established in order to give the project shape. This would include such things as page, table or label margins, paragraph styles, and so on. This may entail using prepared templates or creating them.
Creating the Text Creating text can be the most time-consuming part of the desktop publishing project. Text can be written by the customer or by the person hired to complete the project. It could be a joint effort, perhaps with the customer providing draft material and the hired person editing it. Decisions must be made on such factors as text formatting, spacing and hyphenation rules, spelling conventions, and so on. The text must be typed and proof-read.
Creating the Images Images may be acquired from an existing source such as clip art or digital files, created by scanning pictures or photographs, or built from scratch using software, etc. Images generally need to be edited in some way, and carefully placed on the page.
Preparing the Files Once the project is basically created, the files must be prepared for printing. This includes such important factors as printing drafts and proof-reading, then making corrections. Depending on how the project is to be printed, this may include technical steps like checking colours and copying the project to disk.
Printing the Project When it's time to print the finished project, the documents or files must be either delivered to the designated printer or printed on an in-house machine. Folding, stapling, and/or trimming the physical product may be required. Distribution must be handled by the customer or delegated to the desktop publishing professional.
Desktop publishing can and often does include graphic design, where the professional is responsible for designing and laying out all components from start to finish. The creative process is by far the most rewarding aspect of publishing documents.
