• All knowledge is related and its division into different branches is artificial, but serves a useful purpose for the mature mind; however, for the non-logical mind of the child, which crystallizes the knowledge about centres of immediate interest rather than abstract generalizations, it has decided disadvantages. The field of history, geography, civics, and economics may all supply material for the filling in of the facts about a single centre of interest. Therefore the whole tendency for elementary classes is to make logic the servant of interest, and to blend knowledge from history, geography, civics, and economics together into a course on the social studies. This plan is followed in this text.

• The text begins with a series of chapters on the manner of life of typical Canadian groups, beginning with that of the most elementary, the trapper, and then treating the fisherman, miner, and lumberman, which show greater complexity. Then in a chapter on life in a Canadian village, the civic influences experienced by children are stated as concretely as possible, no attempt being made to organize them logically into municipal, provincial, and federal factors.
• After studying the varying methods of life in a highly developed country like Canada, the book then presents to the children methods of life, just as different as possible from those of Canada, and selects those forms that will show all varieties of geographical environment. It starts with the simplest forms in the equatorial forest, the Arabian desert, and the Arctic desert, where each family is complete in itself. From these it goes to life in Mediterranean climates, and in the Swiss Alps, which are more complex.

• Before blending in the history and geography of the Canadian regions (British Columbia, Prairie Provinces, Ontario, Quebec, Maritime Provinces), a chapter on the growth of Canada is introduced in which is given a running outline of the growth of Canada from a small district around the St. Lawrence to its present area. This includes the gradual winning and consolidation of the country, by means of exploration, wars, settlement, etc., and gives a background of chronology by which historical events under the treatment of the regions can be placed in their proper time relations. The events stressed are those that interest children and will not naturally fall in place under the regions. The high spots in the chief wars are given in detail, but constitutional and political questions are almost entirely ignored.
• Then each region of Canada is treated and the history of exploration settlement, and development of farming, fishing, mining, and lumbering related to their present condition. In this way the relation of the past to the present is made clear.

• ...The maps are all of a graphical or pictorial character, yet scientifically exact. They appeal to the puzzle instinct in the pupil; purposely many features shown clearly in the maps are not repeated in the text. For example it is not considered necessary to give a list of towns in Ontario with the industries and public buildings of each, which would invite memorization of lists; but these towns with the industries and buildings are all shown graphically in the map, and the very act of puzzling them out impresses these facts in the memory in the proper relationship.
