      • Harvey H. Smith's involvement with the Quebec North Shore began in the early 1920's when he left the comforts of New York City to film a documentary of the spring log drive at Shelter Bay. An unseasonal freeze-up fortunately extended his stay long enough to give him, he recalls, "an insight into the pioneering days on the North Shore that I never could have attained otherwise." Twenty years later he returned to work on the second of his three popular novels, hooked his first Atlantic salmon, and was himself hooked in turn, having been back every season since. To write Shelter Bay, he took French lessons and made six special trips to the Quebec North Shore to refresh his memories of those pick-and-shovel pioneers who lived between tears and laughter, fire and ice, a short era ago. The trip that used to take five days by rail and boat now takes just five hours by air from New York....
    • This hardcover book is in good condition. The description of Harvey Smith comes from one end of the dust cover, which was cut off and enclosed as a bookmark. An original bookmark is included with the book compliments of the Ontario Paper Company Limited and Quebec North Shore Paper Company.
