      • This book constitutes a first attempt to present an account of Canadian parties as forces operating within Canada's political system. We draw together existing information on the origin of parties, forms of party organization, leadership, patterns of support, issues, and the relation of parties to the electoral system and government. In dealing with these materials, we have been handicapped by the lack of comprehensive empirical treatment of the subject; hence our analysis is necessarily less than complete. Hopefully, our present efforts will encourage others to help us fill in those areas that remain in urgent need of more systematic treatment.
      • We have drawn together a number of approaches to the study of parties, used by political scientists of various schools and by political sociologists. In order to integrate these approaches, we focused on those influences on and effects of political parties that we considered to be significant. The strategy we adopted made it necessary to abandon both the topic headings and the descriptive approach customarily associated with the study of parties. Yet our method still allows us to account for all those aspects of parties normally considered pertinent. The reader then has two alternatives. He may, if he chooses, follow our order of presentation. But if he prefers a more traditional approach, he can still find all the material he would expect in a book on parties, aided by an index prepared specifically with a view to accommodating such a reader.
