Colony to Nation: A History of Canada Question About Shipping and Handling

  • Colony to Nation: A History of Canada
    • By Arthur R. M. Lower
    • Excerpts from the Preface:
      • .... French Canada, it is true, finds in its history much of the spiritual sustenance that enables it to go on existing, but little of this can pass over to English Canada. There are, as yet, two Canadas, inhabited by two peoples, who as often as not, are at outs. In the strictest sense there can therefore be no History of Canada. There can be histories of French Canada and histories of English Canada. There can be Histories of Canada written by French authors or by English authors, which hardly seem to refer to the same country. There can be useful studies in economic or diplomatic or constitutional history. There can be accounts of this period or that region. There can be polite political history. There can be biography. The past twenty-five years have witnessed a remarkable output of these types of monographic material: it forms one of the most distinguished accomplishments of the Canadian intellect and a book like this certainly could not have been written without it. But since they have not been fused in life, for the historian to fuse all of these elements into one integral substance is close to impossible. Writing Canadian history remains an act of faith, the substance of things hoped for.
      • Yet it is no lack of great themes that has prevented the history of Canada in this sense from being written, for the four centuries of the country's existence abound in themes that appeal not only to the analyzing intellect but also to the imagination. If people find Canadian history dull, it must either be because they are dull themselves or because the Canadian historic scene has not yet been painted in its own bold colours. How could a history full of grandiose projects, starting contrasts, stark antitheses, be dull? How could significance be lacking in the story of a country whose very existence consists in a never-ending battle to accomplish the impossible?
      • ...
      • Unique solutions, founded on unwilling tolerance, have been reached by Canadians for these overwhelming problems of theirs. 'Responsible Government', the compromise between Imperialism and colonialism, or between dependence and independence, was worked out on Canadian soil and by Canadians: the Federal Union of 1867, which through mutual agreement to forgive and forget, opened a way to solving the problem of the conquest of 1763 was in itself one of the greatest acts of statesmanship in the 19th century; the bold defiance of geography contained n the national planning which was an essential aspect of Confederation, resulted in the integration of half a continent.
      • This book has been built about some of these great themes....
