      • Not all Canadians have been pioneers, yet the pioneering spirit has given a special quality to the Canadian Christmas. Dickens in a cold town hall, mummers on the streets of St. John's, an angel in cheesecloth at a school concert, a carol sung by the Hurons--it's an old story in a new setting. On Christmas day in the Klondike a suit of long woollen underwear wrapped a new-born baby; at Lake Tetana, B.C., with the temperature sixty degrees below zero, the newest in packaged foods provided modern pioneers with Christmas dinner; in the Arctic flaming oil drums signalled planes delivering Christmas mail.
      • Cynics and complainers there have been, lamenting what Canadians have done to Christmas. So it must always be, for the festival is part of the people. The noisy shopping districts of modern cities take their place with the revelry of the fur traders, the solemn fete de noel, the homemade gaiety of settlements. For a Czech family, the Christmas decorations in the Union Station meant the same renewal of faith as Champlain had found in the midnight mass of the little Quebec church three centuries before. The eternal miracle has been adapted by Canadians to their own place and time. Of their records we have made this book.
